COOK STRAIT CABLE

The Pacific Gable Company's cable steamer iris, which was engaged in repair work in Cook Strait, has now returned to Wellington. The cable, the shore end of which lands' at Whites Bay, in Marlborough, was in need of repairs, but while being picked up it broke, owing to-its' damaged condition, and the vessel. had to return to port to take aboard a new length of cable to splice on to the broken one. The loss of one cable across the strait is feeing felt very much in Wellington at the present time, as the telegraphic service is now particularly heavy, and until the repairs are effected the service will be delayed somewhat. Owing .to a swell in the strait to-day, the Iris is . not woi'king, but it is hoped that the cable will be in working order again before the Christmas holidays.
