ROWING
The Star Boating Club rowed off the heats of its Ladies' Fours on Saturday. The southerly course, from Fitzgerald's Point to the Taranaki-street. Wharf, a distance of about half a mile, was used. Tho water was rather "lumpy" for the first heat, the wind having just changed, but was perfect' for the second and subsequent heats.
In the first heat, Galvin (str.), Petre (3), Mavkmnnn (2), and Stuart (bow) won by three feet from Diehl (str.), Itobb (3), Shorland (2), and Blaxall-(bow). Galvin's crew were about a length behind at the Clyde-quay Wharf, but, by a spurt, established a lead of half a length, which they kept till the last twenty yards, when Oiehl managed to reduce it to a fe\v feet.
. The second heat saw Wakelin (Str.), •lertf (3), Carr (2), and Teviotdale (bow), beat Brown (sir.), Emerson (3), Eilers (2), and Oatley (bow) by six feet. Brown's boat got away well at the start, and was leading by about a length and a half at seventy yards from the finish when their "three" "crabbed." Wakelin obtained a length's lead on this, and Brown, in spite of an excellent Bpiirt, was unable to overhaul him.
In the next1 heat M'Grah (str.), Stott (3), M'Kenzie (2), and Anyon (bow), beat Obbrn (str.), Young (3), Miles (2), and Gapes (bow), by, a length and a half. M'Grath led all the way, and had an easy.victory. ... Oborn unfortunately had his crew changed at the last minute. In the last heat Murrell (str.), Dennehey (3)', Sim (2), and Martin (bow), beat M'Gowan (str.), Caigou (3), Hart (2), and Ellis (bow) by half a length. Both these craws had "substitute" strokes, as the strokes drawn (Montgomery and Pollock) failed to come to the post M'Gowaii got the best of the start, but was soon overhauled by Murrell, towing a faster and shorter stroke. The lead increased to a length at fifty yards from the finidh, when M'Gowaii, spurting gamely, reduced it by half.
Hunt's crew was scratched,
The drawing of the semi-finals resulted in Murrell v. M'Grath, and Galviii v. Wakelin. The firat of these was rowed on Monday evening, when M'Grath beat Murrell by a length and a half, leading all the way. Bad steering was noticeable in all the races. At least three races were lost through the. bad course steered by the coxswains, who apparently are careless.
