FLOWER SHOW

GOOD DISPLAY AT HATAITAI

The summer show of the Hataitai Horticultural Society was opened in the Hataitai State School on Saturday afternoon by Dr. A. K. Newman, M.P. This was the first show of the society, and tho number and the quality of the exhibits was favourably commented upon. In spite of tho bad season, a.very fine show of roses was exhibited. Among other cut flowers, tho -most prominent were antirrhinums, stocks, pansies, sweet peas, and carnations. There was good competition in most classes, and the judges considered that the quality _ of the exhibits was Very high. I" opening the show, Dr Newman congratulated the Society on the excellent display, and stated that he hoped the society would give more attention to the cultivation of vegetables than, was usually the case in such shows. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) and Mrs. Luke were present during the afternoon. Mrs. Luke, in tho course of her address, gave some timely suggestions. The pot plants and cut flowers Were judged by Mr. J. G. M'Kenzie (Director of Parks and Reserves), the decorative sections by Miss M. Cooper, the cooking by Miss Booker, and the vegetables by Mr. F. Westbury.
