NOTES AND COMMENTS
(II "SIR LANCELOT.")
There was no Summer Meeting held at Woodville last season. The amount handled last week was £49,295, compared with £46,202 at the previous meeting, held in March last. Winners at Woodville have incurred the following penalties at Manawatu : —
Hurdles. Zeus (101b) 10.13; Gillies Hack Handicap, Matty (101b) 9.1, Parorangi (101b) 8.11, Reparoa (101b) 7.5; Manawatu Oup, Cremdes (71b) 8.6 j' Tararua Hack Welter, Some Girl (101b) 8.6; Fitzherbert Handicap, Airowsmith (101b) 7.7; Grandstand Plandicap, Goldshine (101b) 8.1. After her running each day at Woodville, Tressida will probably be allowed to drop out of the Auckland Cup. She is also in the Manawatu Cup. Several Aucklanders who put in an appearance at the Woodville Meeting were on Arrowsmith to a man. Mr. F. M'Manemin, the Auckland handicapper, was among the visitors... A Asprey, who trains Arrowsmith, also brought Admiral Advance to the meeting. He is a big gelding, and showed pace in patches, but D. O'Shea appeared not strong enough to handle him. Ho was "not produced on the second day. They are both down to run at Awapuni on Boxing Day. H. Gray has engaged to rido Alteration in the Auckland Cup. If the New Plymouth horse does not run he will be on Vagabond. After the exhibitions , they gave on the opening day at Woodville, Dribble, Maioha, and Early Dawn were not produced on the second day: The only member of L. Wilson's team to run was Reparoa, who accounted for twenty opponents in the Ruahine Hack Welter in good style. Mr. W. Richmond was not present at the meeting, being represent-' ed by Mr. T. Roulston, one of tho trustees in the Douglas estate. The stewards expressed themselvcis dissatisfied with the form as compared with the previous day. The horse carried ten times as much money on tho machine compared with the first day, when he ran unplaced.. Reparoa is a five-year-old gelding by Sylvia Park, and this was his first win. He was engaged in the Trial Plate at Manawatu, but is not now eligible to run in that event. He is also in the Gillies Handicap on the opening day at Manawatu, with 6.9, but a penalty will bring his weight up to 7.5, which weight will allow R. Heed to ride.
Bonny Briar has trained off, and is to/ get a let-up until the autumn. Her owner informed me at Woodville that, although her name appeared among the acceptances for the Fitzherbert Handi, cap at Awapuni, she was unlikely to compete in that event. The only locally-trained horses to score at Woodville were Zeus and Silver Tongue, both of which are trained by J. Sullivan.
Sweet Memory is engaged in two fivefurlong scurry events at New Plymouth a 6 Christmas time. The local owner who races as Mr.."Geoffrey Mack" informs m© that he intends to send her up to compete there.
G. Young, who rode four winners at the Woodville Meeting, went South last night. He will return for the Manawatu Meeting. His mounts include Crenides in the Cup and Onslaught in the Fitzherbert Handicap. W. Kirk, private trainer to Mr. W. EL Gaisford, recently took up his residence at Woodville, which has become a popular centre with trainers. Punka, who is not a good doer, has settled down in her new quarters. Any work she has done has been of a satisfactory nature. She will probably, make her first appearance in her new owner's colours in the Manawatu Cup. Bindle has , furnished into a good sort of three-year-old. The race he had on the opening day at Woodville would improve him. A two-year-old colt by Hallowmas from imported Eosie Deemond (her first foal) will race as Festivity. He will not race until the autumn; and may be seen at. Waipukurau. Mr. Gaisford has won the Oringi Stakes (named after the late Mr. W. H, Gaisford's station) on the last, two occasions, and Festivity may try to improve on that record. A four-year-old full brother to Crowhurst takes after his relative in colour and markings, but is more solidly built. He will race as Jolly Cove, and may make his. first appeal' ance at Pahiatua. A bay filly by Hymettus—By By is full 6ister to Honey Bee and half-sister to Marqueteur.
Seasprite was not paid up for either at the Manawatu or Taranaki Meetings. She had some hard races at Riccarton, and may be reserved for the New Year Meeting at Stratford', where her owner lives.
Mr. W. Jewell, of Marotiri, a member of the Judicial Committee of the Foxton Racing Club, will act as Deputy Stipendiary Steward at the Taranaki Christmas and Stratford New Year Meetings. Golden Bubble, Spanner, and Surveyor have been engaged at the Hawkes Bay Summer Meeting.
Miss Mimic has come into favour for the Ellerslie sprint race. She is reported to have recently done some good gallops at Riccarton. Rossini will have to be at his best to concede Miss Mimic a stono and ten pounds. At the New Zealand Cup Meeting, Miss Mimic ran third in the Juvenile Stakes, five furlongs, to Humbug and Right and Left. She won the Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old, carrying 8.8, and defeated Warplane, Surveyor, and Royal Stag, in lmin 131-ssec.
Afterglow s name appears among the nominations for the Southland Cup. Mr. J. Harle informs me that Simonides will run in the Railway Handicap, and be ridden by H. Gray, who may have to declare a few pounds overweight E. Browne, head lad in J. Ayres's ..stable, is taking Matty, Spangle, Battle Array, Hallqwyonia, and Astiuome to the Manawatu Meeting. Alfa Laval, winner of the Maiden Plate at the Bay of Plenty Meeting, must be one of the last batch of the Seaton Delaval tribe. He is seven years old.
Alteration, who ie owned at New Plymouth, has been paid up for at both the Taranaki and Auckland Meetings He will probably be found competing in tho Auckland Cup, as ho is not in the 'second day at New Plymouth and was not engaged at Stratford.
Hopng (9.0) was beaten in the Bendigo Handicap by Sakta (6.7), by imported Mazann—Happy Saint, a New Zealand bred mare by St. Ambrose—Happy A^alJey. The Two-year-old Handicap at the same meeting was won by Whi Le by White Star-Hildegard, by Charlemagne 11-Watershoot (dam of Ermengarde). Mr. T. M'Grath, owner of Hoprig, is expected shortly on a holiday visit to New Zealand.
That there is nothing soriously amiss with Bonnie Maid she demonstrated at
Trenthain on Saturday morning by accompanying Battle Song in a, gallop over ten furlongs, covered in 2min ls_sec. The latter was going easily at the finish. Lady Energy (Carl Rosa—Energy), winner of the two principal events at the Bay of Plenty Meeting, is a sister to Cadet. Energy is by The Officer, whoso daughter* have been successful as winner producers. The unnamed Conqueror—Miss Jury mare in H. Kingan's stable was schooled over the hurdles by H. M'Sweeney at Trenthani on Saturday morning. She got round eafely. M. M'Donald has been retained to tide Demos in the Manawatu Cup and Birkeuvale iv the Fitzherbert Handicap.
Revocation was to make the trip to Taranaki, but his name did not appear among the acceptances published on Saturday. 'Sweet Memory will be the only Trent-ham representative at the West Coast fixture. She was accepted for in the Stewards' Handicap, six furloiigs, in which she will have to put up 71b penally.for'the Woodville win. Trenthani Rose is engaged in three events on the opening day of the Hokitika Meeting. Cyra was engaged in the hurdle, races on. the Coast, but is not to make the journey down.. He pulled up lame at Trentham on Saturday morning, and has been sent home to his owner's place for a spell. Preface, who competed in the jumping race on the second day at Woodville, will represent Mr. Whitney' on tho Coast. The imported horse Arrow-smith, whose name has been freely mentioned in connection with the Fitzherbert Handicap at Awapuni since he won at Woodville, has the gift of galloping, and is a beautifully bred" horse. He is by Chaucer (St. Simon —Canterbury Pilgrim), a good winner and successful sire, from Sagitta, by Isinglass—La Fleche, by St. Simon, to whom Arrowsmith is inbred.
H. Kingan will take Pacific Slope and Prince Delaware through to the Hawkcs Bay Summer Meeting. The latter will con.pete in tho Jumpers' Flat races. Rose is engaged in the Christmas Handicap, a mile race, on the opening day of the Auckland Summer Meeting, and may be allowed to drop out of tho Cup. Sonnino (H. M'Sweeney), who is under orders for Auckland, jumped five hurdles at Trentham on Saturday morning in a satisfactory manner. He left for Auckland yesterday, and was accompanied by Battle 'Song. They go in charge of J. Ayres. ■■:.', J. W. Lowe left for. Auckland yesterday, with Mascot, Motuihi, and Wake. At Trentham on Saturday morning, Wake ran half a mile in 50sec. He galloped with Motuihi, who went on and completed five furlongs in lmin 3sec. Mascot went a milo and a-quarter with Battle Array, finishing about two lengths in front, in 2min 15^sec. , It was reported that Depredation was amiss, but it could not have been anything serious, as his name appears among the- acceptances for Taranaki. Besides Depredation R Barlow has Valencia and Generalissimo (half-brother to Madam Ristori) engaged at the Taranaki ingC. Pritchard intends taking a big team to the Manawatu and Wairarapa MeetHalcyon, Self Alliance', and Santorim, place-getters on the concluding day at Woodville, are engaged at the Taranaki Christmas Meeting. The imported horse Valido, who raced successfully in Mr. G. D. Greenwood's colours in the Dominion and New South Wales, was recently represented by 'a winner in Queensland.
The Queensland sportsman who races as "E. J. Craven," who purchased Lady Medallist, is racing some of her progeny. At Brisbane this month the five-year-old mare Silver Medallist (St. Savin—Lady Medallist) ran second.
In the New Year Handicap at Hastings there are six horses engaged—Spanner, Surveyor, Maioha, Lingerie,' Dribble, and Early Dawn—that would have to be bracketed if it was decided to run them all.
Outside of Auckland there are some good handicaps to be picked up during the holiday .season. The owner of the winner of the Southland ■ Cup gets 800 soys, Manawatu 700 soys, Marton 500 soys, Stratford : 500 soys, Wairarapa 400 soys, WyndKam 400 soys.
