AUSTRALIAN ELECTIONS

The Commonwealth election results are, at time of writing, too uncertain to permit of definite comment. It is, however, safe to say that the prospect of a Labour majority in the House of Representatives (that is, of Labour securing 38 seats) is remote; and a Labour majority in the Senate is impossible, because all the 18 sitting Senators are Nationalists, and if Labour won all the 18 contested seats the Senate would still be evenly divided. Whether the Nationalists will have a House majority 'independent of Farmers' members.is uncertain. Much importance attaches to the preferential voting system1 and to the effect of its operation. An analysis of the preferential voting, and how it affected'the third party, wiU be* awaited with interest.
