N.Z. BANK OFFICERS' GUILD
A well-attended meeting of Wellington bank men was held at the V.M.C.A. on Tuesday. Mr. H. J. King presided. In the course of a forceful and interesting address, tbe - general .secretary (Mr. H. ,P. Mourant) spoke.of the good progress' the guild was making. The present membership was over 1400, representing a fraction tinder 70 per cent. of the total male staffs of the New Zealand banks.
Mention was made by the secretary of his recent tour of the Dominion, ■when between fifty and sixty places were visited. Everywhere he had met with a most encouraging reception, and he was convinced that, because the guild stood for efficiency and service in addition to better conditions for bank employees, the banks would recognise the value of their organisation.
Letters were read from the secretaries of the English Bank Officers' Guild and the South African. Society of Bank Officials, Johannesburg, both indicating steady progress in these respective countries.
Mr. Mourant said that at the Dominion Conference, which is to be held in Wellington next month, a great deal of work will be done, including the outlining of the policy of the guild, the setting up of the Executive Committee, the Domestic Committees, and the passing of the constitution. ' Registration un. der the Incorporated Societies Act, 1908, would then be proceeded with. At the conclusion of his address, Mr. Mourant was rewarded by a round of cheers.
The opportunity of the gathering was taken to form the Wellington branch of the guild, and a; local committee.
