SIR JOSEPH WARD'S CAMPAIGN
"I have no doubt whatever," said Sir Joseph Ward, the Liberal Leader, on-
his return from the South Island yesterday, " that the ' Reformers' are going to lose seats in the South Island and that the Liberal Party will be stronger in that island after the election than it is to-day. Further, from the information in my possession, I am of the opinion that the 'Reformers' are going to lose seats in the North Island, too, and that the Liberal Party will come back after the 17th inst. the strongest party in the House, as I hold it undoubtedly is in the country. This, notwithstanding the fact that there has been in different parts of the country an obvious and extraordinary effort made to split the votes by the introduction of a third candidate where it is known that he has not the slightest chance of winning. Such men are evidently put up for the purpose of giving the Reform Party a chance of having candidates returned on minority votes. "
