SUMMER BLOOMS
ROSES, CARNATIONS, AND SWEET PEAS
ATTRACTIVE SHOW AT LOWER
HUTT.
Although not brilliant—the windy, unsympathetic weather of the past week may be blamed for that—the summer show of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society, which is being held in the Drill Hall, Lower Hutt, to-day, reflect considerable credit on the exhibitors. The main- exhibits are roses, sweet peas, and carnations, and all varieties of these are well represented. There are some particularly fine roses on show, especially in the display arranged for effect, for which the Royal Horticultural Society's silver and bronze medals are being awarded. The sweet peas and carnations are also well worth seeing. The exhibits in the cottage garden class, restricted to amateurs, who do not employ any labour, and whoso gardens do not exceed a quarter of an acre, point to careful work and attention, although the ravages of the weather are in evi-
dence.
The decorative class is a feature of the show, the tables being .arranged with all manner of blooms. In this class, too, two prizes are being awarded—one by the judges, and the other by the votes of the visitors^ to the show. The tables decorated by children under 16 are most attractive, and these are being judged by the public vote for trophies presented by Mr. E. P. Rishworth, Mayor of Lower Hutt. '
The large hall is tastefully decorated. At the entrance is a handsome collection of ferns and pot-plants, which cannot fail to attract the attention of visitors. This is exhibited by Mr. H. Poole. Then come the exhibits, in themselves sufficient decoration. At the end of the hall an area is divided off by trellis work, and in this space refreshments are served by a committee of ladies. The whole constitutes a really excellent show, the undoubted success of which is due chiefly to the- untiring efforts of th« secretary, Mr. G. C. Webb, and the energetic committee*.
Unfortunately, the weather is by no means in keeping with a summer show, but there is a large attendance of visitors. The show was officially opened this afternoon by Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P. for. Hutt. The judges are : P>oses, Mr. R. N. Wall; Sweet peas and carnations, Mr. G. P. Holder. Decorative classes, Miss Poole.
