MIRAMAR AFFAIRS
MEETING OF COUNCIL.
The Mayor of Miraniar (Mr. S. M. Stono) presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Miramar Borough Council held last evening. There were also ■present Councillors J. Hicks, B. F. Gardiner, H. K. Robertehaw, E. J. Barnett, and Mrs. M'Vicar.
The Scots College authorities sought exemption from taxation, on the ground that the buildings were used for educational purposes within the meaning of the Eating Act, 1908. The council declined the request. The City Council notified that it had passed the following resolution with regard to the tramways and amalgamation ; "That the council of the City of Wellington resolve that, in the event of tho amalgamation of either, or both., of the boroughs of Karori and Miramar with the city, the tramway system in such borough will be treated as an integral part of the oity tramway system."
The Labour Department notified that 91 houses were to be erect«d in-vMira-mar The letter mentioned the necessity for providing water mains and drains along the streets and roads to which the sections' are fronting on which houses are to be constructed. This matter was held, over
With regard to the Miramar water supply, the following motion*was .passed": "That the use of water for watering gardens by means of a hose or other removable pipe ba and the same is hereby •prohibited." In. discussing the report on wage3, ■Councillor Hicks said he was of opinion that the position of foreman to the borough could conveniently be done away with. In reply to a question by the Mayor, the Engineer (Mr. Fox) stated that the services of the foreman could not be dispensed with and efficiency maintained. The foreman could not, do any more manual labour than he was no\v doing. After* some discussion, it was decided to raise the wages of the foreman and the plumber. The Borough Engineer's monthly report stated that £312 14s 2d had'been expended on wages. Thirteen building permits had been issued for work estimated to cost £4543. The fees were £21 ss. Further work' had been done on the Marine Parade and Totara-road, amounting to £40 14s 0d- The qgst of concreting Hie fnotnath on the south side of the Seatoun Tunnel was £23.
