TELEPHONES

DEVELOPING THE SYSTEM 9

NEW BRANCH EXCHANGES.

Excellent progress is being made by the Post and Telegraph Department in, catching up arrears in the development of the telephone system in Wellington. When the new automatic system was introduced there were some 800 persons waiting for telephones, which they had been unable to.obtain mainly because of the lack of switchboard accommodation, apart from the shortage of machines and material. The opening of the new automatic exchanges at Newtown and Cour-teiiay-place at once provided relief, both, by providing space at these exchanges and by releasing some switchboard accommodation at the main exchange. The Department has since been at work dealing with these applicants according to the order of their applications. When new branch exchanges are in readiness at Kelburn and Khandallah, the Department hopes to be in a position to deal with new applications which may then come in.

The latest step in linking up the whole of Wellington and district with the automatic system is the commencement of'the erection of the Kelbum exchange. The building, which is of two stories, is of fire and damp-proof construction, and the contractor (Mr. G. 'L. Wakelin) hopes to have it ready to receive the machinery in about twelve months. This branch exchange will take subscribers from Kelburn and Karori, and latei'jswhen the busiaess warrants it, a satellite, exchange will probably te established at Karori. The Khandallah building is now complete, and contains some of the machinery, but the exchange cannot be cdmpleted until some parts which have not yet arrived come to hand. It is hoped, however, to have the branch thoroughly in working order next year.

The complete test of the automatic system cannot be made, however, until the central exchange is erected and equipped for the new automatic system, and that will not be for some time yet. Th-3 new building is to be erected at tho reac of the present exchange.
