ELECTORAL ROLLS

CLOSED YESTERDAY.

Enrolment of electors ceased at 6 p.m. yesterday. Naturally Registrars of Electors have been kept busy in the last week or two dealing with claims for enrolment ; but there has not been so great a rush as has been experienced on some previous occasions. The enrolment by postal officers was so satisfactorily nerformed that there has not been so much ground as formerly to catch up. The enrolment that took place for the purpose of the special licensing poll in April also made some difference. Had it not been for this, the special enrolment and the by-elections in Wellington and some other constituencies, the preparation of the supplementary rolls would have been a particularly, heavy task, since it is five years—not three—since the last General Election. Naturally the preparation of the main rolls meant heavy work, because of the alteration of boundaries. The central enrolment bureaux established in the four centres have proved a great convenience to the electors, and have been freely made use of. These bureaux were established for the special licensing poll, but had not been used previously for a General Election. They have dealt with a steady stream of claims, and, in.many cases, havo saved claimants much of the trouble entailed in securine enrolment in their own electorate. The number of applications for transfers has been fairly heavy, and Registrars have had impressed upon them the fact that Wellington people change their place of residence frequently. No doubt this "flitting" is largely accounted for by the house shortage, and the business which is being done in house-pro-perty, forcing tenants^to seek a new-place of abode. ' '
