OPENING OF COURTS AT HATAITAI.
Residents of Hataitai are fortunate in having very fine asphalt, tennis courts at the Hataitai school grounds, and a strong club has been formed. The courts are well situated, having a picturesque view of the straits, surrounding suburbs, and hills. On Saturday afternoon, the members and their friends attended the offioial opening. The president (Mr H. W Tola_)/ in declaring the courts .open, remarked that the membership list was filled, and there were about thirty further applications. This indicated, the necessity for more courts, and he urged the committee to at once co-operate with the school committee and electors' association, and endeavour to secure playgrounds for both children and adults. He regretted that not one section of land in Hataitai had been reserved for the purpose. Possibly an extra court might be made in the school grounds. Expert- had declared the Hataitai courts would rank amongst the best in Wellington, and he felt sure the tennis players of the new club would give visiting clubs a good game, and a hearty welcome. The good work done by Messrs. Grant, Savage, Watkins, and Johnstone was mentioned. Afternoon tea was handed round, and some good tennis was played, the club having amongst its members some experienced players. The Hataitai colours, maroon and gold, have been adopted by the club. The officers are as folldws : President, Mr. H. W. Tolan; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. J. L. Arcus, A. G Barnett, and W. J. Gaudin; honorary secretary, Mr. E. Johnstone; committee : Misses Grant, and Thomson, and Messrs. Watkins, Bishop, and Townsend; honorary auditor : Mr. H. A. Amos.
