MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. E. Page, S.M., dealt with .polico und maintenance cases at the Magistrate's Court to-day.

The names of nine first-offending inebriates appeared on the charge sheet; of these seven, who did not answer their bail, were each fined 10s, and the others were fined ss, in default twentyfour -hours in the cells.

M'Farlane, who had spent the week-end in the lock-up, was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and Robert Porteous, Henry White, Patrick Daley, and Olaf Christian Olson, who did not answer their bail, ,were each fined £1. Porteous was also ordered to pay £1 Is medical expenses. Cornelius Vandervolk, a teaman, admitted having behaved in a threatening manner in Groy-street, but stated that he had not struck the first blow. He was ordered to pay a fuA of £1, or to go to gaol for forty-ejght hours. Charles John Gren is to appear again in a week's time to answer a chargo of having stolen an electric light globe, valued at £1 -19s, the property of "John O'Brien. - .'Cecil Trembath took action to obtain the cancellation of a maintenance order made in favour of his wife during his absence from New Zealand duringl the ■war, basing his case upon allegations that his: wife had left him on several occasions. The wife said that she had been, forced to leave Trembath on account, of his cruelty to her. After going fully into the case, the Magistrate refused the application, eonfmced the order already made, and ordered the husband to pay £15 past maintenance. (Proceeding.) At a sitting of the Court at Mount Cook to-day, Mr. R. D. Hanlon, J.P., presiding, three first offenders, who did not appear, h.id their bail of 10s estreated, and. another was convicted and discharged:
