The manager of the State Coal Depot asks us to state that William Bines and Leslie Oldaker, who were fined yesterday for being on licensed premises after hours, have no connection with the Department. It was stated in evidence that Bines and Oldaker had represented themselves as being connected with the depot.
In informing a deputation of wafersiders to-day that he was appointing two inspectors of gear at Wellington, the Hon. T. M. Wilford stated that the men appointed would also act as inspectors of the homes, thus working in conjunction with the Public Health Department. He intended to confer with the Minister for Public Health on the subject.
A 17-year-old youth who pleaded guilty on Thursday last to the theft of a wristlet watch, valued at 255, the property of Alfred Ansell, was brought before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning, for sentence. ChiefDetective Boddam said that inquiries had been made, but so far as could be ascertained the lad had borne a good character prior to the present lapse. His parents were respectable people, who resided in Christchurch.. A lady residing in Nowtown was ready to give the lad a home until such time.that he could obtain a suitable position. The Magistrate admitted the youth to probation for twelve months, and made the usual order regarding the return of the stolen watch to its owner.
The Wellington Jazz Orchestra advertises that it is open for engagement for balls, dances, etc.
At the V.M.C.A., Willis-street, to-mor-row, at 4 p.m., Mr. C. R. Edmond will speak on "From Le Quosnoy to the Rhino With the N.Z. Y.M."
The usual Saturday evening social will give place to a house warming in the Y.W.C.A. building: in Boulcott-street, tonight. Tho whole houso will be thrown open to the party owing to the special occasion. As there is no room large enough for group gatherings, the room in Fowlds's buildings will still have to be retainod for these large social evenings, and the regular Saturday evening socials will be resumed there after to-night, until such time as sufficient accommodation may bo added to the Boulcott-street building.
