The shortage of coal has turned the attention of scientists to the possibilities of obtaining water-power from the Rhone. The Government has planned a gigantic hydw>-electric scheme to develop 750,000 horse-power. The damming, of the river will render it navigable for ships of 1200 tons to Switzerland, and will also irrigate vast fertile tracts. The project will take fifteen years to complete, and the cost will be a hundred millions sterling.
