HATAITAI HORTICULTURISTS
Much enthusiasm was shown at a meeting of residents of Hataitai (Mr.'H. W. Tolan in the chair) for the purpose of forming a Horticultural Society. The Chairman stated that the objects of the society would be to encourage horticulture and 'cottage gardening in the district, and to endeavour by this means to make Hataitai a garden suburb. Waste spaces and clay banks would be planted and beautified, and the co-operation of the City Council would be sought in regard to this. The following officers were elected:— Patron: Dr. Newman, M.P.'; president, Mr. A. Leigh Hunt; vice-presidents, Messrs. E. A. Batt, A." D..-Bayfield, ..H. W. Tolan; committee, Mesdames Searle, Morcom, Etching, Greenslade, Miss Morebra, and Messrs. Grant (chairman), Thorns, Teil, Jeffery, Greensill, and B. R. Lankshear (hon, secretary), and J. L. Arcus (hon. treasurer). The subscription was fixed, at a low rate, and a big membership is expected. The first show will be held in December, and schedules will soon hp available to members., The. society is to be conducted as a section of the local Municipal Electors' i)jsociation in order that the mutual interests of the district shall be protected and tVe work co-ordinated.
