The Chicago race riots continued for four days, but the authorities gained control when the military were called out. An area of eteht square miles, occupied chiefly by negro families, was cut off from the rest of the city; and no food or other supplies were allowed to reach the negro section by the'white rioters. As ifc was feared that many children might <Me of privation unless food reached them, tie authorities organised relief. Many negro dwellings were burned by the rioters, and some negroes were shot and their bodies burned in the streets.
