Sir James Allen, Acting-Prime Minister, is expected to return to Wellington from the South Island to-morrow.
The Hon. G. W. Russell returned to Wellington from Christchurch to-day.
. Mr. C. R. MT.ean, of Dunedin, has been appointed secretary to the Otago High School Board of Governors.
The Mayor of Eastbourne (Mr. Mather) has been appointed by the council to represent that body at the Municipal Association's Conference.
A Press Association telegram from Marton state's : —Mr. Nicholas Andrew, aged 70, editor of the Rangitikei Advocate, died suddenly at his residence at Gonville on Saturday evening, from heart failure.
.' The chief executive officer of the Dominion Rifle Association (Colonel R. J. Collins, CM.!}.) has sent a cable message to Sergeant Loveday, the winner of the King's Prize at Bisley, tendering him the congratulations of the association on his great achievement.
Mr. John Woodhouse, a very old resident of Napier, has died at the Napier Hospital at the age of 75 years. Deceased had been in the Dominion for half a century, and had lived in Napier for most of the time. He : was father-in-law of Mr. M. L. Reading, editor of the Lyttelton Times.
Mr. B. M. M. G. Laurent died at Hawera yesterday morning, aged 93. Deceased was grandfather of Lieutenant Laurent, V.C. He had been present at the welcome to the latter last week, and was proud and gi'atified to see his grandson return. Deceased was formerly a major in the French army.
The death occurred at Wellington this week, at the age of 75, of Mr. M. M. Dodd, of 86, Molesworth-street. The deceased gentleman was employed in the Defence Department for many years. H« leaves one son, Mr. R.. H. Dodd, of Raetihi, and four daughters, Mrs. T. Kemp,, 86, Molesworth-street, Mrs. C. Prince, Tinakori-road, Mrs. J. Taplin, Blenheim, and; Mrs. W. Jewell, I'oxton.
It is announced that Mr. John Brander is retiring from the position of secretary of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., in London, and that Mr. George M. Reid has been appointed to succeed him. Mr. Bran-. der's connection with the company extends over a period exceeding 40 years, and he has held the post of secretary for about 25 years.
The sudden death took place at Pleasant Point on..Sunday, states a Press Association message from Timaru, of the Rev. J. Gunn, Presbyterian minister, who arrived at Pleasant Point only a few weeks ago from Roxburgh.- He had held a morning service at Kakahu, and was to have taken one at Pleasant Point in the afternoon. As he did not arrive a. car went for him, and he was found lying dead beside his bicycle. Heart failure was the cause of death. Deceased leaves a widow and five children.
