NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BY "SIR LANCELOT.") i

During twenty years horses Carrying lOst or over have only been successful in the Winter Cup on „ four occasions. The 9at division has won six times. No fewer than twenty-five of the horses engaged in the coming race have the lightest weight to carry! Among those in... with the minimum are Sir Ralph, Sdnnino, Risingham, and Sacramento!

After the way -he settled the field in the Finil Hurdles at Trentham' it was expected that,Rewi Poto would be well up in the G.N. Hurdles. The horses that finished behind him at 'Irentham he has been set to meet on the following worse terms: Loyal Arch 81b, Paraoa 61b, Multive 151b, Cynic 111b, Movement-161b, Calma 81b. Walter Garrett intends to make his last stand with Sir Solo in the Grand National Hurdles, in which event ho has been placed the last three year's. He is very well treated if last .year's form could only-be taken as a guide. He and Kauri King then met on level terms. Next month the Aucklander is giving away just on two stone. The Wairarapa. horse is .not likely to be one of the fancied ones so long as Omahu, Rewi Poto, Cynic, Multive, Paraoa, Seadown, ■ and others remain in the race, but a win for the Sir Laddo gelding would no doubt be popular. If he could bf> produced at Riccarton in his Wanganui form Euripos would have a chance with 11.1. He won the Century with 10.9, and on : tho second day put up another stone and won again. In the Century he beat Seadown (9.2) and Paraoa (11.1). In the National Euripos meets Seadown on 81b better terms and Paraoa on 151b worse. It is reported in- the South, however, that Euripos is not being persevered with for the present. Bonny Mac, who defeated Killeney in a hack handicap at the Waimate Hunt Meeting, is a three-year-old gelding by Bonny Glen —Reception, by Syanara— Foresight, by Artillery—Spec, a mare by Anteros that produced a lot of winners in the North Canterbury district.

In the Grand National Steeplechase Master Lupin meets Waimai on 131bs worse tsrms than in the Great Northern, in which the pair named ran first and second. . '.'".•

Styrax, Lochella, and Signature are engaged in both the, Great Steeples and the Hurdles, while Euripos, Teka, ' Detroit, and Sweet '• Tipperary were given a nomination in the Winter Cup and Great Northern Hurdles.

Sir Fanciful (Rokeby—Lady Wayward), a cast-off of Sir George Clifford's stable, has been entered in three hack events at the Manawatu Hunt Club's Meeting. ' He started four times in the spring and was placed tho'last three times out. In the Epsom High Weight Handicap, sevsn furlongs, he was beaten by a length by Good Day in lmin 27 2-& sec. The distance of'the Waikanae Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Manawatu Meeting,1 should -suit him. In the Grand National Steeplechase about half the horses handicapped are in with the light weight provided by tho rules. Waimai has the maximum, and the six best performers are placed within 121bs-of each other, • '"

The best finish ever witnessed in the Grand National Hurdles was the year Medallious ~ won, when half a dozen horses rose at the last fence together, and heads separated Medallious, Hippowai, and Scottish Minstrel at the finish

The . Trentham winner Probity is in two events at the Manawatu Hunt Cluh's t Meeting, and may show up in the event- run over a mile and 55 yards. Most of the progeny of Bezonian have done well as • sprinters, but Probity is bred to stay. Her1 dam, Tortulla, won the N.Z. Cup, and produced a winner of the Canterbury Cup in Diabolo. Another of her progeny in Bank'sia (by Achillee) won the Winter Cup. If she had trained on, Mr. Mason reckons she would have won the- New Zealand Cup that went to Tarigihou. Tertullian (full sister to Banksia) is putting up quite a respectably winning record in the west districts of New South Wales this seaeon.

The veteran trainer Stuart Waddell went through by Napier on Saturday by boat with "Woodlark, Bagdad, and Mandrake. The two last-named may be taken out of the Winter Cup. Bon Rove has won the July Steeplechase .two. years in succession. Ho has won on the flat and over hurdles ■at Ekcartoiij. and may win over! the big fences next month. The Lincoln Steeplechase on the last day may suit him best. Metallura, who is engaged in the Feilding-Hurdles at the Manawatu Hunt Meeting-, is handicapped for the Grand National-Hurdles. In the Grand National Hurdfes Omahu allows Seadown slb for the defeat in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham. Over a half-mile longer_ course the Rangitikei horse may- again 'finish in front oi the local favourite.

Last year Kauri King and Sir Solo, carrying 10.1 apiece, Tan first and second in the Grand National Hurdles. This year the only horse "on that mark is All Over, who may run in the Winter Cup. . Kipling is a class above the other competitors engaged in the six furlongs Hack Handicap at the Manawa'tu Hunt Meeting. In the Metropolitan Handicap at Trentham he ran second <to Silver Linli when the latter was, credited with carving out the distance in under lmiu 12sw:.

D. M''Cauley leaves for the South on Wednesday with Master Strowan aaid Gang Awa'. The Gisborne district has been strong in hurdlers ior several 'seasons past. Among the horses sent South good enough to \win the Grand National Hurdles were Medallious, Paisano, Continuance, and Hurakia. The Poverty Bay district has two good representatives at the coming meeting, in Cynic, and Mul; tive.- The former had only 9.2 to carry in the Great Northern, but at Riccarton will have to.put up.a stone and a-half more. When Multive defeated Cynic at Gisborne be was in receipt of 131b, and at Riccarton receives. 61b. Multive is nicely in with 10.2j^and may prove, at Riccartor that his Trentham form was too bad to be true.

San Sebastian', winner of the Waimate Steeplechase, was entered for the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase event 6at Trentham, but was prevented from coming up on account of the restricted railway service. The competitors were such a poor lot that San Sebastian would have won one or both events had he put in an appearance. He accompanied Crib to Trentham two years ago, and won on thp second and third days.

Last year the three principal events at the Grand National Meeting were all run on the opening day, but next month the Hurdles will be ran on the second day. . ■ . . ' Seadown knocked himself while running in tho paddock the day after he raced at Trentham, and has been spelling since. He will not fulfil 6ngageinents at the Grand National Meeting. The only member of J. Lowe's team to make the trip will be Coalition, who will be shipped South fco-cight.
