DEFICIT DUE TO HIGH PAY.

Mingworth (Postmaster-General) stated that in 1913-14 the profits totalled £5,222,000, and in 1918-19 £6,500,000, a record. It is estimated that the deficit for 1919-20 will be. £2,000,000, which is due to bonuses and higher wages. Telephones were run at a loss because the war-time charges were not transferred to the subscribers.
