OUT OF WORK WOMEN.

The total number of women who took out-of-work donation policies since the Estimates to 14th February wsb 633,318, of whom a. little over 2000 were demobilised from the military forces. Of these policies about 25 per cent, have been renounced by the holders, showing that they had obtained employment. Of this number (156,138) 36,578 women appear to have gone into domestic service, 14,319 into clerical and commercial work, and 7502 into the engineering trade. Replying to a deputation which waited upon him the other day, Sir Robert Home frankly acknowledged tho very great hardships which women were necessarily suffering by the second dislocation of industry due to tho return from war to peace. But he reminded the deputation that large nujnbers of men Were unemployed in the same way. " There is no fund for employment," he said, "any more than there is an illimitable fund of money for the nation to distribute. The nation cannot create trade by waving & wand. We want trade, and'if wo had it everybody would be employed, and I hope in time we shall have sufficient trade.. In the meantime enterprises are at a standstill. People .are not embarking on new ventures. Everybody is waiting for something to happen." Sir Robert said they had clear information that certain people had been, kept from going back to work by the enjoyment of tno unemployment donation. ' ■■■-■■■
