NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BS "SIX IitfOELOT.")

In connection with the Otaki Maori Eacing Club's Winter Meeting, to be held on 3rd and 4th June, owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for all events, and entries for the Maiden Flat Race and Final Hack Scurry, close on Tuesday next at 5 p.m. with Mr. O. J. D'Ath (secretary), Otaki.

Wei were informed by cable yesterday that the price the brood mare, Lady Victoria fetched at auction at Sydney was a record for Australia. Lady Victoria is an imported mare by St. Frusquin— Lady Cynosure. She had a foal at foot, by imported Piquet, and was served by Shepherd King. Although the amount realised is not stated, it is improbable that it is a record for Australasia. Goldeiv. Slipper (Multiform —Aura) claims that'■distinction. As a three-year-old, she was sold at the Yaldhurst dispersal sale for 4500 guineas. Battle Song, Bonnie Maid, and Asfcinome will represent J. Ayres's stable at the Manawatu Meeting. Some few weeks back, it was reported that an offer of 1300 guineas had been refused for Spanner. He is a good-looking well-bred colt, and probably the amount stated is within his value. Spanner's sire and dam were both imported to New South Wales.

Desert Gold has1 won the Manawatu Gold Cup three years in succession. Her name appears among the' acceptors for the race to be run on Wednesday next. Trainer Jefferd is taking Tigritiya and Vagabond through to the Manawatu Meeting. "

Armstrong (secretary). Guinea Gold went through the circuit of West Coast meetings without scoring a single win.

Affectation, Murihiku, and Multicipal will represent J. T. Jamieson's stable at Awapuni.

Star Lady was taken out of both her engagements on the second day of the Wellington Meeting. Her next appearance will be in the Awapuni Gold Cup. Neither Punka nor Afterglow is in that event, but the first named has been paid 'up for in tha Autumn Handicap. Waimatao, winner of the Railway Handicap at Trentham, was engaged in the Telegraph Handicap at Manawatu, but was allowed to drop out on acceptance night. At the Sydney sales Mr. E. J. Watt gave 350 guineas for a filly by Beragoon from Golden Fly, an imported mare by Your Majesty. Maronne was engaged in the Maiden Plato at the Manawatu Meeting, but is not now eligible to compete. . Four yearlings bought at the Elderslie Stud sale in New Zealand in February were landed in Sydney recently. One was the Kilbroney—Flowery Speech colt, for whom Sir S. Hordern gave lOOOgns. He is to be trained by T. Scully, while the Kilbroney—Medley lilly, for whom the same buyer gave 350gns, goes into Mr. 0. H. Bryan's stable. Mr. J. Wren's Kilbroney—Vanna filly (260gns), another of the arrivals, is to ba trained in Sydney by J. Donohoe; and Mr. H. Chisholm's Kilbroney—Orange Pippin colt (400gns) joins H. J. Robinson's team. The four youngsters were broken in E'rior to leaving New Zealand, and will c ready to commence work before most of those that are sold at Randwick.

The Speaker and Astinome, winners on tho opening day at Trantham, have each incurred 101b penalty in the Woodhoy Hack Handicap, six furlongs, at Manawatu. '

Mr. A. Woods, the well-known starter, was among the . visitors at Trentham on Thursday. Simonides and Robur will race at the Manawatu Meeting en their way home to New Plymouth. The class engaged at the Marlborough Meeting is better than usual. Dusky Eve and Gazique, top weights in the Cup, were placed in the King George Handicap at Ellerslie. There was then a stone between them. Gazique has since won at Avondale and Blenheim. They meet on level terms. t Mr. Jas. Bull was not present at Trentham on Thursday to see Yankee Jack win.
