THE MAYOR AND PATRIOTIC FUNDS
Persistent rumours are being circi^ated that the Mayoress-(Mrs. Luke) is. receiving £200 per annum from patriotic societies; also that the "social" which the Mayor and Mayoress tendered to the patriotic workers was paid for out of the patriotic funds. "These rumours," says Mr. Luke, "are absolutely without foundation. Neither Mrs. Luke nor myself has received one penny directly or indirectly from any fund since. I have been Mayor. I regret to say that several times I have had to finance receptions out of my own funds. Here is a case in point. When T returned from the South a number of workers, eager to give a special receptiop to the men of the Hororata, met me in my room to make provision, and said they would collect the money. I have received just one pound, and I had no other help. I paid for the reception out of my private funds."
