PROSPECT OF SETTLEMENT

A MODUS VIVENDI. SUGGESTED,

PARIS, 24th April,

It was at the earnest and urgent request of Mr. Lloyd George that Signor Orlando agreed to rejoin the Council of Four, with the object, if possible, of reaching a settlement. Whatever the decision, Signor Orlando had to return to Italy on domestic and political business. It is believed that the conversations prior to his departure were .such that some modus vivendi was suggested which Signor Orlando wished to submit to Parliament, and upon which ho may obtain a .mandate for further action. There, is every hope that a settlement will ultimately be effected which will satisfy the Italians without irritating the Jugoslavs.

LONDON, 25th April,

There is some inclination not to be unduly pessimistic at Signor Orlando's departure, in view of the continued presence of. some of the Italian delegates, oil "the principle that "while there's life, there's hope." Signor Orlaudo may re-

turn, saying, "I have done what I promised, and Italy backs me." The latest report is that Italy will be offered econom-. ic compensation for Fiume in the shape of financial and commercial assistance. On the other hand, some people hint that the same economic superiority, as far as America is concerned, may be directed against Italy if she holds aloof. It is pointed out that America is largely feeding Italy and. supplying her with fuel.
