SOLDIERS' VOTES IN NEW ZEALAND.
Continuance 3847 Prohibition 1471 Informal .' 40 Continuance majority.. 2376 There are two or three small country returns yet to come in, but the figures are not expected to be altered materially. The number of votes cast by undischarged soldiers is smaller than was anticipated. There were about 10,000 men in the Dominion entitled to .vote as soldiers, but some of them may have chosen to vote in their civilian capacity. The Minister of Justice has also announced the following returns of votes cast by soldiers on board ships carrying troops: — TRANSPORT lONIC. Continuance 544 Prohibition 132 Continuance majority.. 412 STEAMER TALUNE. Continuance 7 Prohibition 1 Contimfanco majority.. 6 TOTAL SOLDIERS' VOTE. Continuance 25,651 Prohibition 6,585 Majority for Continuance ... 19,066 There are also several alterations in the civilian ...vote, which make it as follows : CIVILIAN VOTE. Continuance 230,687 Prohibition 244,311 Majority for Prohibition ... 13,624 GRAND TOTAL. Continuance 256,338 Prohibition 250,896 Majority for Continuance ... 5,442 The civilian amended votes are as follow: — Cont. Proh. Seamen's votes: Continuance 54, Prohibition 18. Waikato absentee votes are as follow : Prohibition 158^ Continuance 90. Patea—Absentee votes: Continuance 65, Prohibition 90.
The votes now to come in include those of the soldiers on several transports, a. few small returns from soldiers in New Zealand, and a few slight additions to the civilian vote.
