WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB

FIRST DAY'S EVENTS.

(BY "SIR LANCELOT.")

Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the opening day of the Wairarapa Racing Club's Autumn Meeting at Tauherenikau on Saturday. The attendance was satisfactory, the special train from Wellington being well patronised. Among those present were the Hons. T. M. Wilford and A. M. Myers. The Masterton Municipal Band was in attendance, and helped to enliven the proceedings ivith a programme of selections. Totalisator investments amounted to £13,658, compared with £18,593 on the first day of last summer meeting. Proceedings opened -with the Trial Hack Handicap, for winch all eight acceptors were paraded. Beacon, who drew inside position, began best, but, before they had gone a furlong"- Astinome was at the head of affairs. At halfway, Blighty and Dainty Step were in behind the leader, but at the turn Blighty dropped out, and Dainty Step and Beacon were running second and third. In the run to the post Astinome held her own and won easily by a couple of lengths. Timidity was running on at the end and beat Beacon for third place. Astinome (Maniapoto—;Hellenois) is trained at Trentham by J: Ayres for Mr. G. A. Palmer, who used to race Grit Lawless and Ormesby Pervolo was taken out of the To Waka Hack "Welter Handicap, leaving in five runners. Risingham, who was successful on his last appearance at Woodville, -was sent out a good favourite. Consultation and Risingham showed out from a good despatch. The latter was steadied, and, racing along the back, Rienzi was in second 'place, the field being bunched. Three furlongs from home,' Courtfield dropped. back a couple of lengths, eyi-. dently having met with some slight interference. ' At the bend, Risingham was lying second on the rails. He ran up to Consultation a hundred yards from homo, and won comfortably by half a length. Rienzi and Courtfield were next. Risingham, a stablemate of the previous winner, carried more than the other competitors, and his supporters hadi to accept a short price. Hastie, who had an engagement later in the day, was the only withdrawal from the Easter Handicap. Cooing, Kilrush, and Rose Pink were prominent at the stand, and the three performers named always had charge. When the back of the course was reached, Cooing was two lengths clear, Battle Array being last. About three furlongs from home, Kilrush headed Cooing, and, drawing away in the run home, "won by two lengths, with something in hand. Rose Pink was just beaten, for second place, Multaine being/fourth. Battle Array did not get a good run. Kilrush (Kilbroney—Prank) is leased by A. MAuley, who recently took up his residence at Tauherenikau as private trainer to Mr. H, W. Brown. Kilrush looks as if tho race would improve him.

Daytime, Red Signal, and Bairnsdale were withdrawn from the Wardell Handicap, leaving in nine runners. After some delay at the start, Lady General cut across Waimatao, causing him to lose a few lengths. Matatua, Philomela, Potentiality, and Chimera were in the order named as they raced past the halfmile post. Matatua was well clear at the bend, r where Waimatao moved up into second place. Matatua was being ridden halfway down the running. A hundred yards from home Chimera appeared on the outside, and overhauling the two leaders won by a clear length, with Waimatao half a length away. Lady General was fourth. ■ Although she failed at Feilding, Chimera is at the top of her form at'present. She has done well at Tauherenikau, where she won her first.race. She was a few pounds better backed than Waimatao.

Prince Hal, who gave himself a slight knock on the morning of the races, was the only scratching for the Nursery Handicap. There were no fewer than four brackets. The Riddiford pair carried most money. The colours of Printemps, Chaeronia, and Speechmaker were prominent when they had gone a furlong. At the bend Demades joined the leaders. Printemps was first into the straight, and was challenged by Marula a hundred yards from home. A couple of chains from the box Miss Gold dashed up on the outside, and smothering the two leaders won by half a length. Miss Gold (Lucullus—Recoup) was successful at the last meeting at Tauherenikau. He is owned by Mr. W. R. Kemball, who is at present racing in Australia. Chaeronia met with some interference at the turn. An inquiry was held, and W. M'Ewen (rider of Miss Gold) was fined £5 for careless riding.

Dainty Step and Hymen were taken out of the Makahi Hack Handicap. Justification, who had competed in the Trial Hack Handicap, was brought out again. Zabism and Pervolo led to the turn, the latter dropping out at the distance. Here Bonville-and Justification came through, and in a good finish the former secured the verdict by a bare half length. Zabism beat Pervolo for third place. . Bonville is owned by a Featherston patron of J. Ayres's Trentham stable, and made the third winner that trainer led in during the afternoon. Bonville had not raced for some time, having contracted influenza at. the New Zealand Cup Meeting.
