ENCOURAGEMENT OF SPORT
The encouragement of sport is an outstanding feature of the. work of the V.M.C.A. Under this heading, the annual report of the association states: —
"The Rugby game (after a lapse of several years) was introduced amongst our members. The team.did fairly well in the Junior League, and had ». membership of twenty-five. Mainly by the help of bur members, the Wellington. Hockey Association was enabled to start a senior competition this season. We entered no fewer than three teams, all doing exceptionally well, the A team reaching the semi-finals. Association football had the largest membership of our outdoor sports, and it is a pleasure to report that this branch of sport, on and off the field, has done much to uphold the principal ideals of the assocition. The juniors'were well up in the various competitions, and the seniors won the Charity Cup. Basketball, a popular, game in the gymnasium, was played with enthusiasm by all the classes, and various Association Committee matches were arranged from time to time.".
