LEAGUE OF NATIONS
RECEPTION OP PROPOSALS
BASED ON SMUTS'S PROGRAMME,
LONDON, 27th January.
Full accounts of the League of Nations proceedings have been favourably received by tho London Press, apart from the Morning Post, which continues its destructive criticism. It is generally recognised that the conference has really got to work. There is much commendation of M. Clemenccau's strong lead and his anxiety to get business transacted. Some newspapers consider that General Smuts has supplied the basis of the official'scheme for the League. The protests of the smaller nations receive attention, though their attitude is regarded not as one of fault-finding, but as a natural expression of disappointment Jhat they are not able to take a larger share in the deliberations.
WASHINGTON, 27th January. The prevailing feeling in official circle-, is that the Peace Congress action rs-
garding the League of Nations is a tangible step towards the realisation of the League. It is not thought that serious opposition to the League will devo'op in the United States Congress.
