THE WEATHER
Yesterday was a very sultry day, and the evening was remarkably hot, especially in view of the weather experienced lately. The popular view was that a thunderstorm was coming; but instead cooling rain began to fall at three o'clock this morning, and has continued intermittently since. Almost half-an-inch had fallen by nine o'clock to-day. Rain is reported generally this morning, and the rivers are high in Westland and Southland. The prediction to-day is for cloudy to overcast weather, with rain probable generally; heavy rain on the east coast of the South Island, with rivers flooded in Westland and Southland and rising in Canterbury.
