INSTRUCTIONAL COURSES AT TRENTHAM

SPECIAL SERVICES ARRANGED,

It is announced Umt a series of instructioiin.! course* for selected .-officers' and men will ho held at Treutham Camp during the next few months, commencing' on 6th February, and continuing'im'til the ond of the training Benson (31st. May). The courses will bo divided into four —musketry, machine-gun, physical training, and infantry drill. They will be open to—(1) Selected oUiccrs and n.c.o.'s of the Stsif Corns, Permanent, Staff, Territorial Force, and Senior Cadets'; (2) a special cour.se for n.c.o.'a of the Permanent Staff. The duration of the course will be as follows :—(1) Terri-; ■torial Force and Senior Cadets, 14 working days; (2) special course for n.c.o.'s of the Permanent Staff, one month. The course for tho n.c.o.'s of the Permanent Staff will be from the sth February to the sth March, 1919, both days inclusive For all officers and n.c.o.'s other than the Special Course for Permanent Staff n.c.0.'8, tliero will be six separate courses as under : First course, sth to 21st February ; second course 22nd February, to 11th-March; third course 13th March, to 29th March; fourth course Ist April, to 16th April;, fifth course 18th April, to Sth May; "sixth course 7th May, to 23rd May. The number of officers and n.c.o.'s permitted to attend the above respective courses from the Wellington District -is: —(1} Special Permanent Staff course, 16 n.c.o.'s; (2) Musketry course, 3 officers, 3 n.c.o.'s ; (3) Machine-gun course, 3 officers, 3 n.c.o's; (4) Physical training course, 4 officers, 5 n.c.o.'s ; (5) Infantry drill course, 4 officers, 5 n.c.o.'s. In addition to the foregoing the Wellington district is permitted to» select two field officers to attend a senior officers refresher course in all subjects, for 14 working days (dates not yet fixed). The attendance of these officers and. n.c.o.'s will be voluntary, and written consent of their employers will have to be obtained, but all, will be required to attend for the whole period. Group and unit commanders are required to submit the names of all officers and n.c.o.'s willing to attend any of these courses. Each officer and n.c.o. before he can attend must be specially selected and recommended in order of merit in their list by their respective commanding officers. The required numbers will be selected by District Headquarters from the names of all those submitted, and their names will be immediately notified to their respective unit commanders. Each course will be quite distinct, and those attending will require to be capable of performing a good deal of hard work. The n.c.o.'s for the special course for; Permanent Staff n.c.o's will berecom- ;- mended in the following, order :—(I) 1 Permanent Staff, compulsory; (2) tern-. porary staff, in order of merit, omitting those known to be leaving the service in the near future. As the Wellington district has always led tho way in attendance at courses of instruction, it is earnestly hoped that it ■will maintain its position at these courses, ■' which, owing to,the cancellation of the annual training camps, are more important than any course previously held, and although tlie time allowed for the. recommendation of nominees for tlie first and second courses is very short, the officer commanding the district appeals-to unit and. group commanders to get into "immediate touchyjvjth,all,concerned, and. forward by wire, 'if"necessary, to district headquarters the, names of those recommended for at.least.the .first and second courses, by the 10th January
