' . '.. THE OPIHI ARRIVES. 'An interesting arrival at Wellington late on Saturday afternoon was. the steamer Opihi from .Vancouver • She berthed on Sunday morning at the Jervois-quay Wharf. Formerly the tarque Lilla. the Opihi was converted into a steamer some months ago, and on the 23rd September she left Lyttelton for Vancouver She arrived there towards the end of the October, when the inlluenza epidemic was at its height: Owing' to this fact the Opihi was detained at the port for 20 days. Seven of the crew coutracted the disease during the steamer's stay at Vancouver, and when the Opihi sailed oil the 20tb November, these men were left behind. They have since recovered, and arrived at Auckland on Saturday by the Niagara. A terrlllc hurricane delayed the Opihi on the run down to Honolulu, .which was. finally reached on the 4fli December Suva, the next port of call, was reached on the 10th December, and the run from there to Wellington cccup-dl nine days Owing to a shortage of labour, attributable to tlio epidemic, members ot the crew had to assist in coal-loading opera-, tions ot the ports of call. The Opihi, which is owned by Reese Bros., of CbmU'hurch, brings to Wellington 1800 tons ■of-cargo, which consists mostly of tinned salmon, paper, plaster of Paris, and carbide. Her deck cargo includes 24 motor-cars. Captain Campbell is in charge of the vessel, and Messrs. McArtnar, lefFnes, and Co. are the Wellington agents. On co.mpletion of discnarge at Wellington the Opihi will proceed, to Lyttelton, ncr tome port. NIAGARA AT AUCKLAND. The H.M.B. Niagara arrived at Auckland at 3 p.m. ci> Saturday from Vancouver, Honolulu, and Suva. She is a clean ship, and will leave the northern port for Sydney to-morrow. ANNETTE EOLPH'3 CARGO. The American wooden steamer Annette Jtolph which comes to the agency of the Union Steam Ship Company, and which should shortly arrive at Wellington, is bringing from San Fran Cisco SPOO tons of general cargo. This includes 813 tons for Auckland, Wi tons for Lyttelton, 104 tons for Tiniaru, 10-1 tens for Dunedin, 73 tons for Ontnaru, and 01 tens optional. After I discharge the Annette .Eolpli will leave for the Islands to load copra for San. Francisco. PERSONAL. Sir. A. Jackson is now mate of the Baden iPowell. llr J. P Burns has replaced Mr. J. Framer as second engineer of tlis Mapourika. Captain Mackenzie, who was formerly in charge of the auxiliary schooner Huia, at present commands the UciOD Company's barque Dartforcl. which has" just completed a record trip to Vancouver. # ' PERTH FROM NEWCASTLE. With a full load of coal for the Wellington Gas Company, the collier Perth arrived in the ! stream at Wellington early this morning from Newcastle. She later berthed at the Miramar Wharf to discharge. When this work is com pleted the ve3sel will leave port for Greymouth , to load timber for Sydney. Captain Dawson is still hi charge ol the vessel, and G. T. Hull and Co. are the local agents. The Navua will leave Wellington on Thursday Ctt" Friday nest for San Francisco. | The big American sailer John Ena was to 'hare left Dunedin yesterday for Sydney At the/New South Wales port she will load for Ban Francisco. Eain delayed the Corinna at New Plymouth on Saturday, and her departure for Wellington tad to-be put off until to-day. Sho should arrive here to-morrow. The departure of the Monowai for Napier, etsborne. and Auckland, with town cargo for all ports, has been fixed for 5 p.m. to-day Hie .Teasel arrived »t Wellington yesterday from Lyttelton The liner Orator is due at Wellington on Saturday next from Lyttelton to complete her Homeward loading. At the southern port.the steamer will load 4000 bales of wool, 20,000 bags of grain, and 1000 casks of tallow. She IS expected to sail from Wellington on the 10th January for London.
