COACH OVERTURNED
STATION MANAGER KILLED,
(»I TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAI 10 IB» POST.)
MASTERTON, This Day. A sad fatality occurred on the road between Masterton and Tinui shortly before eleven o'clock on Friday morning. Messrs. Fly, Young, and Beattie's mail coach, driven by Mr. Thomas Strain, had left the Blairlogie Junction Hotel, which is the changing place for horses, when it met a cart driven by an employee of Mr. Hugh Morrison, of Awatoitoi Station, at the foot of what is known, as the Blairlogie Hill. The drivers of both vehicles pulled up at a wide section of the road to facilitate jpasfeing in safety. Unfortunately, however, the horse attached to the cart, which is usually quiet, plunged up the side of the hill and overturned the vehicle. This caused the leading horses in tho coach to rush over the side of the embankment, dragging the coach with them.
The driver of the coach hung manfully to his charges, but could not prevent the vehicle from overturning. There were five passengers in the coach at the time. Mr. J. N. Campbell,^ manager of Mrs. Andrews's Breakneck Station, who occupied the box seat, was thrown on to his head, and rendered unconscious, while another passenger, named dark, was pinned under the coach. The driver and the remainder of the passengers escaped without injury. The coach was quickly lifted 'and Mr. Clark was extricated; and it was found that though bruised and shaken, he was not seriously injured. It was seen that Mr. Campbell-jya's in a serious condition, and a telephone. message was desepatched to Masterton for a. doctor, but when Dr. Cowie arrived, Mr. Campbell was dead. The cause of death was apparently ' concussion of the brain. The body was brought to Masterton to await an inqueat. The^late Mr. Campbell was sixty-one years of age, and, was a nephew of Mr. F C. Andrew. He was a single man, and was well known and highly respected throughout tho district, ffis father was for many years chief engineer j of the GovernesnS steamer Hinemoa.
