NEW SUBMARINED

BRITAIN'S LATEST VESSELS

DETAILS OF REMARKABLE CRAFT

(UNITED MW6S ASSOCIATION.—COHBIOHT.)

(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLI ASSOCIATION.)

(Received December 28, 9.30 a.m.)

NEW YORK, 27th December

United, States naval officers, who were attache* to the American Fleet, have just arrived from the North Sea. On being interviewed they declared that England had built a new type of large submarine carrying 12-inch guns mounted forward. The submarine was used for bombarding Heligoland on several occasions. The recoil from the gun is so heavy that the submarine is forced six feet below the water. The officers added that England had developed a submarine with 25-knots surface speed, steam driven, and armed with 4-inch guns. They carry a crew of fifty, and are equipped with long-range wireless apparatus. When submerging two stacks are folded back, and the hatches automatically closed.
