CHRISTCHURCH, This Day William Steele, fireman on. the s.s. Kent, pleaded guilty to tlie theft oE thirty-one pith's of gloves, valued at £18,*froril the vessel, and also to selling the same articles. He was sentenced to imprisonment for three months with hard labour for the theft, and was convicted arid discharged on tile other charge. The Magistrate declined to order the. forfeiture of the 1 gloves, as tlie owners coiild not be penalised for the act Of the accused Ift smuggling the stolen gloves.
