Dr. Banks, who has occupied the position of medical officer in charge of the Kaikoura Hospital, has asked to be relieved of his position at an early date. • ' Private Harold Norman Day, of Lyttelton, has been awarded the Military Medal. Private Day left with the 19th .Reinforcement. . Another old resident of Wellington passed away to-day in the person of James Meyrick, of 91, Hanson^treet. Deceased arrived in Wellington in the ship Alma, in 1857, and went with his parents to the Wairarapa. He took part in the Maori War in Wanganui in the early sixties and obtained a medal. He was also bugler of the first fire brigade (Central) in Wellington and still remained a member of the Fire Police up till his death. He leaves a wife and five children (3 sons and two daughters). Dr. W. Diamond, whose death in Christchurch was briefly announced yesterday, had been ill for a year and had suffered much during that time. The deceased was the only son of the late Dr. Jas. Diamond, Sydney, and was born at Harwpod, near Glasgow, 54 years ago. He graduated as a surgeon at the Glasgow University in 1889, beine medallist for surgery for this year.' On qualifying, he acted as house surgeon to the late Sir George M'Leod, of Glasgow Western Infirmary. On relinquishing this position.he went to India, and on his return resumed his duties in Glasgow for a Space. Later he practised in Gippsland, Victoria, for three years^ and in 1895 removed to Christchurch. For some time he was honorary surgeon to the Christchurch Hospital, and also local medical officer for the New Zealand Railways.
