HUTT COUNTY

Mr. J. W. Cudby, Inspector of Works in the Hutt County, reported to the council to-day that in his opinion any amount less than £60 spent on Phillipsroad would be of little use until the worst parts are formed and proper water channels provided. He did not recommend the expenditure of any money on the road bridge, as it is what might be termed a bush bridge, and to redeck it would cost at least £18 plus freight and cartage. The expenditure on the main road in the county per mile from the Hutt Borough to the Rimutaka Summit from Ist April, 1917, to 31st March, 1918, was £61 3s Id per mile for a distance of 22 miles, and on the West-road from Paremata to the Waikanae-river (23 miles), was £67 18s 9d. The difference was attributed, to damage to bridges and greater amount of stone crashing on the latter road. The road constructed by the Railway Department at Heretaunga near the post office had been satisfactorily completed. The road from Cottle to Normandale in places, was in a very bad state owing to the recent heavy rains, but arrangements had been made to have the road put in order to enable the settlers to get their wool ont.
