NEW ZEALAND'S SUGAR
STATEMENT BY MR. MASSEY.
In reply to a question by Mr. E. Newman about the agreement with the Colonial Sugar Company, the Prime Minister states: — "On the Ist April, 1918, the Government, on the. unanimous recommendation of the Board of Trade, entered into an agreement with the Colonial Sugarrefining Company for the supply of sugar to New Zealand for one year, commencing the Ist July, 1918. The company undertook to supply a* the requirements of the New Zealand home consumption of sugar for the year ending the 30th June, 1919, at the wholesale price of £22 10s, f.o.b. Auckland, for No. la, other grades in correspondence, subject to the condition that nothing happens to prevent the manufacture of the sugar or its transport to the Auckland refinery. At the date of the agreement the market quotations for Australia were:—New South Wales, £29 ss; Victoria, £29 7s 6d; South Australia, £29 15s 6d•; and West Australia, £31. The estimated financial result to TTew Zealand as compared with New South TPale* is as follows:—New Zealand's consumption is approximately 64,000 tons per annum, and New Zealand saves £6 15s per ton, a total saving of £432,000. As compared with Victoria, the saving- is £440,000; with South Australia, £465,----600; and as compared with. West Australia, £544,000."
