CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAY TROUBLE

The Tramway Board held its fortnight, ly meeting this afternoon, but the men's demands and the trouble arising out of them were not mentioned in open meeting. It is understood that the position is being considered by the board sitting in camera as a Works The General Manager* of the Tramways has written to the secretary of the Tramways Union, again urging the advisableness of holding a conference on the questions in dispute. He says that conference proceedings would; enable information as to the extent of the rise in the cost of living since last year to be fully ascertained. The statistics used by the labour advocates in Wellington show that the cost of living is considerably less in Christcourch than .in Wellington, which point could be more satisfactorily discussed round th« table. In reply to the statement of the union that the weekly earnings .of conductors are £2 13s only, the General Manager s»ys the records show the earnings range from £3 10s 7d to £4 3s 4d, including overtime, and those for motormea range from £3 14s lid to £4 10a 4d.
