NOTES AND COMMENTS

(ME "SIS IiAKCELOT.' )

The Kurow Jockey Club's Annual Meeting is set down for decision tomorrow. The horses engaged include the Geraldine winners, Bellrock,., Rose Pink, Mortham, and Radial. Most of the competitors are also in at the. Dunedin' Meeting next month. H , • ' • In the ■ Hakatarainea Handicap, six .furlongs, Bellrock will have to carry 9.4, and meet Spyglass on about a stone worse terms than at Geraldine. .Spyglass won over'the shorter distance 'at Ashburtonj when he defeated Zephland and others: Mortham, Tremena, Bellshire, and Leaping Burn have been paid up for in the Kurow .'Handicap, seven furlongs, also the Belfield Handicap, five furlongs. Belair is nicely placed in the big event with 7.13. In the Belfield Handicap the Geraldine winner, Radial, will have to carry 8.5, which is only 21b .more than he -won. with, on his last appearance. Subterfuge, a stable mate of „Belair, is in the big race with.6.l3, but is also in the -Hack Welter, the • distance :of which, ten furlongs, would probably be more to her liking. . None of the horses engaged in the Waitangi Steeplechase showed any-form at the National Meeting. -Kaupokonui won oh his last appearance at. South Canterbury. Some of this season's two-year-olds will make their first appearance in the Trial Plate, four furlongs. The juveniles engaged include the locally-owned Russett (Autuninus—-Aema), the Wingatuitrained Link Up : (Birkenhead—Secret Lank). The latter is reported to be. a good mover, and may be the best >of a poor field. , • •., If reserved: for the- Welter. Hack, Subterfuge may' be ridden by an apprentice rider, which would reduce his weight to 9.0. .The daughter of Countei'feit was very -unlucky last season, being hi second place on half'a dozen occasions. The. fresh horses engaged in the Belfield Handicap include Ardmore, a placegetter at the National Meeting, Thestius, aiid Bon'Spec;. .The latter, (a stable, mate, of Belair arid Subterfuge) starteS 'only twice last season asa two-yeartold, and 1 was successful on his second 'appearance at North Otago; ; At the Waikanae Stud, Northern Rose '('dam of Trentham Rose) has foaled a bay filly by Boniform, arid Morganatic (King's Guest—Dear Heart) a bay filly by, the same sire. Both mares go. to Boniform again this season. Red Ribbon's 'name is' missing .from' the list of.nominations for the Masterton and 'Wellington Meetings. This fact should'be noted by her admirers for the I New Zealand- Cup, as, good stayer that she.is, it is hardly, likely she will see out a race like the New Zealand Cup, solidly run from end to,end, without getting a racing preparation. ; Mill Queen went , wrong. at Otaki, which accounts for the absence of lier name from the Opaki and Wellington nominations. , . . : : Undecided has been engaged in the hurdle race at the Waverley - Meeting, and ,wil) probably be.sent up. .. v ,',... : . ;The Marton Jockey Club has donated i the totalis'ator fractions.at its. recent meeting to the Copper Trail Fund. •">'Mr.;;H.; Coyle has been- appointed handicapiper to the •; Avondale- Jockey Club, succeeding the late Mr. J. ' .: '. The principal event at the . Dunedin Meeting is worth 175 soys to the winner, I and does' not carry a. penalty in the New Zealand Cup. The Cup horses engaged in the Mosgiel Handicap are Rorke's Drift, Margarine, Rose Pink, John Barleycorn, Killard, Cynic, and Sedd-el-Bahr At Trentham on Saturday Merlelaus galloped six furlongs pleasingly, taking lmin 20sec. for; the distance without having to do his best. Miss De Val was worked on the tan track at Trentham on' Saturday morning. She has been entered at the Masterton and Wellington Meetings; but is a very unlikely starter at either Fisher, who has not yet competed in a steeplechase, has been entered for the hack arid hunters', events at Trentham. ' The nominations received for the Masterton" Meeting include sixteen horses engaged in the New Zealand Cup. The principal event each day is wurth 145 soys to the winner, and does not carry a penalty in the .Riccarton ! race. The winner of both events at Masterton would only have to put up 51b extra. The Wellington Handicap, worth GOO soys to the winner; carries I 101b penalty. " ; ' At, the conclusion, of the general meeting of the Wellington Racing Club on Friday afternoon,: Mr. D. M.- Findlay congratulated the president; Mr. J.B. Harcourt, on his Te-election and his •rntry into his eighteenth year in the capacity of president. Mr. Findlay suggested that such b. worthy period of service should be recorded in some permanent manner, by the hanging of a painting or a portrait in the club room,' if the club ■ were disposed to provide funds for that purpose. Mr. Harcourt ■briefly, responded, thanking the speaker for his kind remarks..
