THE AIR OFFENSIVE
HEAVY ATTACKS ON ENEMY

LONDON, 28th September. The Air, Ministry reports: In conjunction ' with the French and American operations yesterday we attacked the railways at Metz-Sablons and Audun-le-Roman (north-west of Metz), with good results. In bitter air fighting we brought down three enemy, machines. Six British machines are missing. Night fliers bombed th« railways at. Metz-Sab-lons, Mezieres, and Thionville, and the Frescaty aerodrome. Many direct hits were made.,
, A French communique states: Our night bombers dropped over twenty-one tons of bombs in the region of Laon, particularly on the railway stations at Mont Cornet, Marie (14 miles 'north-east of Laon), and Laon. Numerous fires and explosions upon the targets were observed. . •' ■ LONDON, 28th Sept., morning. Sir Douglas Haig reports : Our aero-' planes dropped twenty tons of bombs on enemy dumps, railheads, and billets, ignited hangars, and destroyed a machine on the ground. We brought down seven i others in attempting to repel the attack, and four others elsewhere. -Five British machines are missing.
