"When the enemy shall coma in like a flood, the Spirit of tho Lord shall lift up a standard against him.' ■ (Isaiah LIX., 19.)
; Many times since the great struggle commenced in Europe, the words of the prophet wo have quoted above have come as a cheer and a comfort to the people of God. It was a human adversary whom Isaiah, saw from afar. Against that onrushing tide of enemies there arose a single champion—the Spirit of God. He had seen in his own lifetime the mighty acts of that holy, unseen power. He had seen the Assyrian host "come down life a wolf in the fold, and how the might of the Gentile unsmote by the sword had melted like snow in the glance, of the Lord." It is told us that this was done because the King of Judah and the prophet had cried to heaven. God fulfils Himself in many ways, but He has not changed, and by whatever means Ho chooses the answer still comes. "I said not unto the seed of Jacob, seek ye M© in vain." Havo we not seen it ourselves again and again in the last four years? When defeat seemed inevitable, an inexplicable halt and turning; whon the flood seemed ready, to submerge us, the waves ebbed back. Behind our lines an xinknown army of reserves, on their knees, with a hand of faith holding on to God. We need it more than ever now. Let us ask in faith, nothing^ doubting; let 1 us join bur fellow-Christians all the world over, seeking that the Spirit of God may overcome the spirit of evil in ourselves and in our enemies, and that Christ may be recognised and glorified j amongst us. Many_ feel that they cannot I pray in faith for victory, while sin has so great a power in our nationj but we can ask in faith for deliverance from evil, within and without, knowing that such is the will of God. Also, we can praise Him that ho has kept us from a spirit of hate, and has given us so great a spirit of selfsacrifice. We can praise Him for the cheerful courage of our men, and ask to be shown how to repay them. It is a timo to win blessing for the world, through unwavering faith and triumphant, hope in God. "Let him ask in faith, nothing- doubting " St. Janies 1., 6 (R;V.).
