A Reuter message from London last evening recorded the death of Sergeant Ben Uzzell, a noted footracer, who was serving with the New Zealand Forces. He was killed in action. Mr. J. Mackenzie, of Oamaru, who has been appointed Director of Parks and Reserves in Wellington City, will take up his new duties on Monday week, 7th October. The Wellington Land Board to-day passed a motion of condolence with Mrs. Girdlestone, of Muritai, whose son Hugh, foi'merly employed in the Land •Department, died recently while on active service, A Press Association telegram from Melbourne states that the Rev. John Walker, of Ballarat, has been elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, succeeding Professor MacIntyre (retired). Mr. J. A. Liasington, Palmerston North borough inspector, who joined the New Zealand Engineers, and has been in camp during the past three months, has been discharged as medically unfit, and has taken up his former civilian duties. . Mr. Edwin Arnold, J.P., a resident of Wellington for the past 35 years, who was confined to his house for three weeks with a severe attack of bronchitis, is now convalescent, and. able to attend to business again.. Gunner L. A. Daniell, N.Z.F.A., of Foxton, is returning to New Zealand on i furlough in a fortnight's time, after over three years of war. Gunner Daniell has served in Egypt, France, and Belgium. He was badly wounded in October of last year. Included in ,the latest list of . war honours awarded for acts of gallantry in the field is the name of Lance-Cor-poral C. W. Clemance. son of Mr. P. (H, Clemance, of River Bank, Wanganui.' Lance-Corporal Clemance went with the 6th Reinforcements, and has thus seen 'over three years' continuous service. Sergeant R. K. M'Donell, of the Lower Rangitikei, recently returned to New Zealand. He left with the 11th Rein.forcements, and was all through the big engagements on the Western front until he was dangerously wounded at Passchendaele, which necessitated his return to tho Dominion. Mrs. L. ■ Pppe, of Nairn-street, Wellington, has been advised that her two soldier sons will bo shortly returning to New Zealand. Sergeant Ernest Pope, Military Medal, who has been wounded three times, is coming back in about a fortnight on duty furlough, and Sergeant Herbert Pope is returning on a hospital ship invalided.- Another of Mrs; Pope'sl sons, Sergeant Arthur Pope, lost his life the Western front last year. Mr. and Mrs. 8. G. Hamerton, of Boul-cott-terrace, have received' news that their only son; Claude Stanley Hamerton, who joined the Royal Navy a year ago last month as an engineer sub-lieut-enant, has been promoted to an engineer, lieutenancy, and is now attached to the flagship of the Indian squadron. Engineer Lieutenant Hamerton, who 'is Ya native of Wellington, served his apprenticeship in Messrs. David Robertson and Co.'s foundry, Wellington, and left New Zealand about six,years ago. Shortly afterwards he joined the Atlantic Transport Line, and was in the Western Ocean trade in' several of its vessels, all but one of which (the Michigan) have been torpedoed after,he left''them.
