FRENCH MAKE GOOD PROGRESS
LONDON, 26th September. Mr. Philip Gibbs writes: "The French made good progrgess at l'Epine d« Dallon, three miles south-west of St. Quentin, but were held up for some time at the Manchester Hill Redoubt. This recalls the fact that the German offensive of 21st March began with the capture of fcheseAwo points. The Sixteenth Battalion of the Manchester defended Manchester Hill to the test man.
IAttSTRALIAN-NE\V ZEALAND ASSOCIATION AND MUTER.) ! LONDON, 26th September. A French communique states : West of St. Quentin> the enemy attempted to eject us from l'Epine de Dallon. All Iris assaults were repulsed. Between the Ailette and the Aisne the day was marked by violent enemy counter-attacks on the Moisy Farm plateau and the region north of Allemant, where desperate fighting topic place all day longs* Despite repeated efforts the enemy failed to recover our gains of the previous day. Ho lost heavily, and! left prisoners.
SIR DOUGLAS HAIG'S REPORTS LONDON, 25th September. Sir 'Douglas Haig reports : There was sharp local fighting this morning -in' the neighbourhood of Selency, which we captured with several prisoners. Our rifle and machine-gun fire broke up with loss three counter-attacks north-west of Fayet. We beat off the enemy's attempted surprise attack eastward of Epehy, and many German dead were left in front of our positions. We repulsed the enemy's raiders at night south-east of Inchy. A strong enemy pa^iy entered one of our posts in the "neighbourhood of Moeuvres, but was ejected 1 "by a counter-attack. (Received September 27, 8.30 a.m.) . LONDON, 26th September, Sir Douglas Haig reports : We successfully continued local operations during the afternoon and at night north-west of St. Quentin. The English made progress, and captured certain strongly-defended localities in the neighbourhood of Selency and Gricourt, and took a number of'prisoners. Besides the counterattacks launched by the enemy north-west of Fayet, he also twice unsuccessfully attacked us north-west of Gricourt. The English were successful in minor operations nonth-west of La 'Bassee, and advanced the line. We repulsed a counter-attack in this locality in the night. We improved' our positions slightly north-west of Armentieres. ' y
