NOTES AND COMMENTS

(«I "SIR t«fCBIOT."j

The writer, is informed that H. Gray broke a bone in his foot when he struck the rails when riding Polynesian*, in the second race at Otaki. He had two mounts later in the afternoon'before he gave in. He will be unable to ride at Kurow, but hopes to be at Dunedin. Leaping Burn (Kelburn —Euroclydon mare), a winner on the opening day of the Grand National Meeting, ran second in the Belfield Welter Handicap at Geraldino yesterday to Bellrock (Rokeby— Canterbury Belie), full brother to Mortham and half-brother to Bellshire (by Downshire), who was unsuccessful ' in his- only appearance last season. Bellrock is engaged in the Hakataramea Handicap, six- furlongs, and will have to put up 9.4, which includes 101b penalty for yesterday's win. Desert Gold won the Champion Plate at Trentham three years in succession, but is unlikely to be among the competitors next month. Mr. G. L. Stead will probably bring Almoner and Kilmoon back after the A.J.C. Meeting, and the first-named may run. Gloaming is not engaged in the V.R.C. Derby, and he may therefore return and run at Trentham. Biplane, whose name. has been fr.eely mentioned in Australian papers in connection with the Caulfield Cup, may also return. With Desert Gold and Co. in Australia, it would be easier to win weight-for-age races in the Dominion.

Tunic, winner of the Ohapi Hack Handicap, was among the competitors at the last Blenheim Meeting, when he run second to Black Heath. He scored his first win yesterday. Tunic is by Bonny Glen (son of Scornful and Disdainful), from Jacket, a New South Wales-bred mare, by Grafton—Blue and Gold, by Grand Flaneur—White and Blue. Tunic therefore belongs to the same family as Gold Medallist, by Medallion—Corolla, by St. Albans—'Waterlily, by Rapid Bay—White and Blue, bred in Germany in 1876, by Monseigneur from a sister to Blue Gown, winner of tho English Derby. ' . . A. J. M'Flynn was'riding for Mr. E. Short at Otaki, nnd rode Demos (7.13) in the Flying Handicap. Eed Cent., runner-up in the Ohapi Hack Handicap at Geraldine yesterday, was placed on both days at Ashburton. He is a five-year-old gelding by All Eed —Mint Queen, an Australian-bred mare by Developer (Pioneer —Photo), from Minting Queen, by Minting—Antithusiast, by Enthusiast (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas). Mr. H. Card came down from Featherston .yesterday to see his filly Bonville work. She has been • doing well, and will probably make her first appearance this season at Masterton. Bonville went with Bonnie Maid, the pair registering lmin 19sec for six furlongs. Bisingham and Battle Song took a second longer. '. . . After racing at Bandwick, Desert Gold will go on to Victoria to fulfil her engagement in the Melbourne Cup. A local sportsman who saw the New Zealand champion race on the other side last autumn, and has also seen her run most of her races in the Dominion, considers she is well treated in the Melbourne Cup with 9.6, and compares Mr. Lowry's mare with Carbine, who- won the same race with 10.5. If she does win, it is' pretty safe to say she will get the great-, est reception any horse received since the son of Musket aiid Mersey won in 1890. ; .-.. . . ...

The Wellington-owned Rose Pink scored her third'successive win ' in the .Geraldine' Cup, and increased her total winnings to nearly 2500 soys. She is now five years old, and this will probably be her best season. Yesterday she beat John Barleycorn at a difference of 71b. She was unlucky to be left at the post at Marton,, otherwise she might have won there. She carried 101b penalty for the Damievirke win at Ashburton, but got off lightly with 71b extra at Geraldine. She is engaged in the Kurow Handicap, seven furlongs, in which she will have to put up 51b penalty, bringing her weight up to 9.1. She is also in the New Zealand Cup, and is the second Cup horse to win since the nominations closed. Local sports who stuck to the daughter of Kilbomey, and Madder got a great'price. Ashley Reed rode her in her three wins. ' . ,' .

When Pa.paress fell in the Hurdles at Egmont she sustained severe injuries, which will probably prevent her racing again. An effort is\ being made to save her for stud purposes.

The withdrawal of Mortham from the Squatters' Handicap left the veteran Oxenhope at the head of the list. As at Ashburton, he finished among the alsostarted division. The form in the Fairfield Hack Handicap, on the concluding day at Ashburton, pointed to Thestius, who beat Radial by two lengths, but the latter managed to turn the tables. Pyjama (who was successful at Amberley earlier in the month) ran second. Radial only raced three times as a three-year-old. He ran second to Thistlecrown at Beaumont, and won at South Canterbury, beating Melee and Thistlecrown. Radial is by All Red—Aerina (a member of the successful Soult—Hotcherina family), and is a full brother/ to All Ready aad Hot Air, both useful performers in the Otago district. Radial is engaged in the Belfast Handicap, five furlongs, at Kurow, on 3rd October: A 101b penalty will bring his impost up to 8.5.

, Desmine, the imported filly by Radium—Desrina, showed signs of soreness while working on the Porirua beach, and has been sent home to Waikanae- for a spell. Vascular (Vaseo —Pellicle), who , ran first and second at Ashburton, scored his second win for Mr. W. B. Clarkson in the Wainui Hurdle Handicap at Geraldine yesterday- Imported Vasco, who died in 1914, sired a number of winners, and one good handicap' performer in Di Gama. Vascular fetched only 70 soys at the Karamu clearing sale, and looks like turning out a cheapl purchase at the price named. His next appearance will be in the Waitangi Steeplechase at Kurow.

Gwynne is now owned by the Mana.watu sportsman who races as "Were Pewene." When he ran second at Otaki he earned tho same colours as the rider of the . successful sprinter Naumai wore a few seasons back. Gwynno is a halfbrother to Ahika, both being from Louie, a mare that won races along the Manawatu line a few seasons back'

At the Waikanae Stud Skirl (by Martian—Reel) has produced a bay or brown colt by Bezonian and visits him again; Satisfadre (Birkenhead' —Content), bay or brown filly to Boniform and visits him again; Effort- (Advance —Endeavour), chestnut colt to All Black and visits Boniform; Maltegarde (Charlemagne ll.—Annabelle), bay colt to Boniform and visits him again.
