STRIPPED.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.)

(AI'STRALTAN-NBW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

(Received September 16, 1 p.m.)

PARIS, 15th September. When Mr. N. D. Baker, American Secretary for War, General Pershing, and General Petain entered St. Mihiel, the Mayor and the remaining citizens welcomed them with touching enthusiasm. They reported that the town had been subjected to forced levies, amounting to *■ million francs, and that a large number of men and boys had been deported to Germany. Prior to their flight the Germans stripped the countryside bare by systematic pillage and destruction, even stealing the entire contents of the peasants' cottages, including the bedclothes.
