Powell as engineer of the Tainui Pilot Petersen, of the Wellington Harbour Board, has passed the special examination provided for in the Harbour Board regulations. Captains J. Dawson (harbourmaster), Q. G. Smith (Superintendent of Mercantile Marine), and H. S. Blackburne (Nautical Adviser) were the examiners. Captain J. E. Page, late of the Kamona, has taken over the command of the Kakapo in place of Captain Jackson. RACHEL COHEN FOR MACQUARIES. , According to a southern exchange, the brigantine Rachel Cohen has sailed for Macquarie Island from Bluß, After a long delay a shore party has been secured to work the islands for sea, eleohants and penguin oil. While at the Macqiftries the Rachel. Cohen will endeavour to load the balance of last season's take of oil and ship it to Hobart. It will be remembered that the experiences of last season were rather unfortunate in that the head man of the party died on the island, and later on a Government vessel, which visited the island to take off the "take" of oil, after standing off for nearly a fortnight await, ing suitable weather, abandoned the job. This is the oil that the Rachel Cohen, under Captain Gildin, intends to secure after landing the party. . After a stay of 20 days at Wellington the American schooner Bertie Minor left port yesterday for Vavau to load copra for San Francisco. The overb.au! of the Rarawa has been completed at Auckland, and the vessel left on Saturday for Onehunga. She was to resume her Onehunga-New Plymouth running to-day
