THIRTY GERMAN DIVISIONS USED
DEFECTIVE ARTILLERY PRACTICE
LONDON, 2nd. September. The United Press correspondent states: That a desperate effort is being made to check the Allied avalanche till the safety of the Hindenburg line has been gained is shown by the identification of some twenty-three divisions which have been thrown into tie Somme front. Since the battle began well over thirty divisions havu been used. Von -Ludendorff, in an order which was captured, throws a light on the raggedness of the German gunnery, which has been noticeable throughout. The order speaks of the "startling results of the British gunnery," which destroyed 13 per cent, of the German guns. He orders, increased counter-battery work.
