NOTES AND COMMENTS

(IV "SIB LANCELOT.")

Mr. H. W. Brown's recent purchase, Cyresian, is a three-year-old bay gelding by Elyskiv—Cyirma. He was successful in the Juvenile Stakes at the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting. The form at Trentham and Riccarton did not definitely settle the question as to which' was the better of the wellknown pair of performers. Master Strowan and Waimai. In the Wellington Steeplechase Master Strowan, in receipt of 31b, made the best show^ ing. In the Grand National Waimai received 21b, and defeated Master Strowan by eight lengths. There is evidently not much between the pair, but over the Ellerslie country, with 12.7 each, Waimai would probably be sent out favourite. Gaekwar, a double winner at the Grand National Meeting, was sired by the Lochiel horse Ghoorka. •The only two progeny of the defunct sire Flavus racing in the Dominion are owned by Mr. A. W: Rutherford, the Canterbury , owner. One of the pair, Jingo, has been. improving lately, and been placed in his last five starts. He scored his first win on" Saturday after being placed earlier in. the day. Jingo is the first foal of the Nev Zealand-bred mare Lady Content, by Birkenhead— Content, by Dreadhough^-Lullaby.' She is a half-sister to Success (dam of Kilwinning and Killowen)' and Peace (dam of Chakwana).' A full-sister-"to Lady Content, (named- Satkfaire) was purchased in Sydney by Mr. Lan Duncan, and is now in ' the Waikanae Stud: Lady Content won races in New South Wales, and) Satisfaire, was a good stakeearner in Queensland. Most of the stock of Flavus are noted for their staying powers, but Jingo | probably throws back- to Lullaby, a daughter, of Apre- ! Mont, a great sire of sprinters. Contender (who won races in the Dominion and Victoria), R-arata, Obsidian, Tranquil, and Valhalla were other winners belonging to the Jingo family. 'A two-year-old colt by' Bezoriian —Satisfaire, in M. Hobbs's Riccarton stable, is shaping, satisfactorily. . ' Mr. Angus Gibbons headed the list of ■winners at the Grand 1. National Meet ing with 1390' soys, of which amount Kauri King won. 1190 soys. At the sale of Mr. G. L. Stead's thoroughbreds at Christchurch on Friday last, Garston, by Birkenhead—Lullaby, was sold cheaply for 35 ; guineas. She is the dam of Bonville, and is in foal to imported Nassau. Garston is almost full sister to Lady Content, dam of Jingo., . ■ • ' : After running unplaced in the Grand National Hurdles, Fisher was purchased privately by Mr. 3. B. MacEwan, a patron of H. Telford's Trentham stable,' and rah in the local sportsman's name in the Sydenham Hurdles on Saturday. The second money was 100 sovb, ho that the Maniapoto gelding so far looks like paying his way. Since he came into possession of Mr. Angus Gibbons, Ibex has been a consistent performer. Out of five starts he was, three times second, once third, and once' unplaced. He won 200 soys in placemoney at Riccarton; ' Bairnsdale is to make the trip to Marton. He will be accompanied by the three-year-old colt Jingleform, by Formby—Jingle. The latter is a half-brother to Captain Jingle, and' will make his first appearance in the Maiden Plate at Marton. Both horses are trained at Miramar by their owner, Mr. J. Adams. ;Although he failed in the Winter Cup with 11.2, Form Up. finished , third. ht the August Handicap with 11.9—a great weight-carrying performance. At the sale of, Mr. Gerald 'Stead's Braekonfield stock last week at Christchurch, the brood mare Gargoran,' by Charlemagne ll.—Miss Birkenhead, changed hands for 60 guineas. Miss Birkenhead raced in Queensland under the name of Aideen, and subsequently returned to the Dominion. She is the dam i>l a.promising, colt, sired by Bezoniah, in F. G. Carmont's Lovin stable. ' The Trentham stables'are represented, at the Marton Meeting by..Undtecided,; Coalition, .Cotillion, Cbui^tfield, Mata-' tua, 'Mascot,. Bo Peep, Devotion,, Prince, Delaware, Rose Pink; and Arihial ,F. . Davis has . delayed his departure for Sydney until next week's boat. The New South Wales-bred Duchess Eudorus, recently purchased by'i a patron of A. Asprey's Ellerslie stable, is. engaged iri the hack events at Mar-, ton. She is by imported Eudorus from' Acrospire, a champion pony performer, who won' the Ascot (Victoria) High Class Handicap, of 1000 soys, ,beating" twenty others. , ' Acroshire' (by Downshire), the first foal of'Acrospire, .won in. Now South Wales last'season. Mr. Frank Armstrong, for some time an inmate of a private hospital at Hast-, ings, is on a visit to Wellington, greatly improved in Aealth. He was not able to . attend the Grand National Meeting, but hopes to be at Marton, where Yellow and Black is engaged. : Judging by the entries for the Marton. Meeting starters at the early spring! meetings in this Island are in for a: busy time. For the eight events atj Marton 254 nominations have been re-' ceived, an average •of over thirty per! race. There are fifty in the Trial Hack Plate. ■ If forty of them make the acceptance owners will provide the whole, of the stake. J. M. Cameron is arranging to leave for Sydney at the end of the month with a team of four of Mr. W. Richmond's horses. They are St. Elmn, Impediment, Lingerie, and a colt by Demosthenes from Mangaroa. ■ ' , The Grand National Steeplechase win-' ncr St. Elmn was got at the Waikanae. Stud during the time, St. Ambrose was located there. The St.. Simon horse died at Elderslie, after serving one season: there, about 1910. He was insured for £1000. Six weeks before the policy expired he became hopelessly paralysed, and immediately after the policy mar tured lie was destroyed. So the joint owners, Messrs. J. B. Reid and I. G. Duncan, did not participate in the insurance money. The class of horses engaged' at the Marton Meeting is above the average. They include Wishful in the Hack Hurdles, Gladful in the Hack Steeplechase, Coalition and Yellow and Black in the Rangitikei Steeplechase, and All Over, Form Up, Ibex, and Kauri King in the flat events.: At the Waikanae Stud Prelude ('dam of. Peronilla) ■ slipped twins to Martian, and; Purity (by The Officer— Enid) had a deadl foal to the same sire.: Success (dam of Killcwen) foaled a brown filly to Solferino and visits that sire- again; Miss Birkenhead (Birkenhead —Arothusa) foaled a bay colt by Boniform.; Peaco (dam of Chakwana), a bay filly by Bonifoira; Mistime (full-sister to Miscount), a bay filly by. Kilbroney; Lady Jean 11. (imp., by lan—Bettyfield), a bay colt by Boniform. Kipling (Demosthenes —Gossip), the good looking half-brother, to Bobrikoff, who was recently under offer' to Mr. AY. Richmond and a, patron of J. Coyle's Bulls stable for 1200 guineas, has been engaged in the Trial Plate at Marton.
