COAL COMMITTEE CONTROL
Touching on another phase of the coal trouble, Mr. M'Combs states:—"l wish to draw your attention to certain anomalies existing in connection with the coal business in Christchurch. The State coal depot, which should act as a check against the exploitation of the public, is now practically under the control of a committee of its competitors—Messrs. J. A. Redpath, A. M'Kellar, and P. M. C. Cleary, who wore gazetted a coal committee on 4th October, with power to ensure supplies to essential industries. It would be interesting to discover whether the committee haa been using its powers unfairly by leaning on the State depot supplies rather than on their own, I submit, however, that the shipments for the State depot should not be under the control or direction of a committee of coal merchants, and that NJie State depot should not be compelled to give supplies to essential industries other than those which were formerly dependent on the State depot for their supplies."
