Good progress was made last week with the championship tourney of the Wellington Chess Club, the results being as follow :—W. E. Mason T, v. James 0; Fo'uby 1, v. S. Gyles 0; Still 1, v. Kelling 0; Barnes 1, v. Ward 0; Davies 1, v Clark 0; Fouhy £, v. Mackay £; Still 1, v. S. Gyles 0; Barnes 1, v. Godtschalk 0; and Davies 1, v. Mackay 0. Six rounds out of fifteen aro now disposed of. Messrs. W. E. Mason and A; W. O. Davies are leading, each having scored the possible to date, viz., six clear wins. Messrs. Barnes (4-1), H. L. James (4-1), and "Godtschalk (2-1) aTe in close pursuit. Six rounds have also been got off in the club's annual handicap tourney, and here, too, Mr. Davies, who is alone on the scratch mark, has put up the fine score of six clear wins to date.. Messrs. S. Mackay, W. 'C. White (Petone), and E. S. Taylor are also scoring well. Today's match, Ngaio v. Wellington, is the first meeting of these clubs. The Wellington Club is not sending any of its five ex-champions of New Zealand to Ngaio,sa'nd a close contest may therefore be looked for. The following are the best scores to date in tho annual handicap tourney of the Wellington South Chess Club:—W. J. Harper, six wins, no losses; H. Welton, 6-J ; H. J. Thompson, 6-1; and G. P. Anderson, 5-1. Messrs. Purchas, Berry, and Mulvey, each with only two losses, are also well to the fore. Several games require a second sitting, including the fixtures Harper v. Anderson, Harper v. Thompson, and Berry v. Welton. The finish, which should he reached by tho end of September, promises to be exceptionally ciose. Mr. W. ,C. White, of Petone, is leading in the annual handicap chess tourney of the Wellington Working Men's Club, his present score being six wins and no losses. The following are the next best tallies :—Barnes, 4-1; Wild, 4-2 ; J. Reid, 3£-2a5 H. Douglas, 3-0; Costello, 3-2; Eton, 2-1; Faulkner, 2-2; and Long, 2-2. The twelve-aside telegraphic match, Wanganui v. Masterton, ended in a tie, each side scoring- six points. At Board'l, 0. C Pleasants (Wanganui) won from G. A. Jones (Masterton), and at Board 2, L. Pleasants (W.) drew with F. Kummcr (M.), who is well known as one of New Zealand's strongest congress players.
